B.E.T. Animation

In a post I made in February, I spoke about my NY-Comic Con experience with some animation I directed for B.E.T.
Well, our favorite "tube" has finally gotten a hold of the pieces.

READ A BOOK
(music by Bomani Armah / directed by me/ animation produced by Six Point Harness):
EDIT: the video has been removed from youtube...but, you can view the censored version on BET's site and the full version at tirefirefilms.

Lastly, another bootleg from the same event, is something that aired in March on B.E.T. to commemorate the 10th anniversary of BIG's death.

BIGGIE
(excerpt from "Unbelievable" by The Notorious B.I.G. / animated and directed by me)

Enjoy!

I remember you showing me this one day whe we were about to leave class.

It's very socially relevant, and unfortunately to many people especially "our" people fall into those sterotypes. I have a whole rant I could go on about people who say other people "Act white."

It's also interesting how certain commentraries can only be made by people within certain ethnicities.I mean if someone of another skin color made this (especially with right leaning political views) they'd be crucified. It also plays into the whole debate about the "N word" that seems to be going on.

You got to wonder what would happen if someone like Bill Cosby saw this. Would his head explode because of the rampant use of certain words, or would he approve of it.

Anyway, keep the updates coming Tyree.

Stephen James.

hey teach

I was just watching this at work yesterday and the animators noticed what I was watching and all recognized it and were like "hey we were just talking about this at lunch?" and I'm like "nice, the director was my professor" and they were like SNAPS!

I'm guilty of name dropping now but C'MON

@ dawud - you know.
@ madhatter and sarah - thanks! My latest endeavors won't be as shocking...but, I hope you'll appreciate them just as much.
@ spj - man, I hear you on all fronts. but, really, all the credit goes to Bomani Armah for making such a relevant song. It's cliche, but the truth hurts and that's why animation was the perfect medium the song because it magically softens the blow.
@ stuart - HA! man, you can drop my name anytime.

thanks again!
angleo - you think so?
spj - honestly I can't remember start to finish...but, about 1 week on the initial board and concept. And, another week and a half to lock it down after approval of the concept. Character design and layout was kinda happening at the same time being that portion of the crew was small(me, Angelo Vilar, and Eric Bauza - find them on my links under LA FAMILIA).

BGs by Angelo, me, and Kerry Dwyer were going on while animators, Dave Gerhardt, Rob Lilly, Eric Pringle, James Krenske, Marius Alesce, Ryan Kramer, Gregg Franklin, Jaime Velasquez, me on the booty shots, Joe Kossuth, David Hite on some 3-D, Danner on mouths, damn...I think that's everybody were grinding over the course of 2 weeks. Nick Lakiotes on the BG Color and Art Direction..retakes killed by myself and Gregg Franklin. Then like another week of compositing by Brendan Burch and Mike "NEO" Jacobsen. John Warrin on the sound mix.

whew!

Daily Insights (7/23) +Wkly Art, Pic, and Instructional Video

This ENTIRE blog has lots4U2C +daily entry, but4ALL daily posts: http://www.xanga.com/michael_lover_of_the_arts/

Hello!

My blog today is on the subject of:

"Art, Controversy, Culture and Society"

WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS ENTRY OR EXAMINE THE LINKS IN IT IF YOU ARE OFFENDED BY CONTROVERSY, VERRRRRRRY VULGAR LANGUAGE, ETC...

This entry is for thoughtful people who can handle controversy and look at things with an open mind :)

K, I warned you... or maybe I interested you?
Here is your Daily...

Slice of Michael's Life:

Now don't get mad at me... I did not create the video I am going to refer to at the bottom of this blog. See it only if you are brave enough and capable of being thoughtful about it! Someone sent it to me, and all I can say is, "Wow!" It certainly got a reaction from me. I have thought about it, the tribute video of it I found, and its creator's website for days.

Insight:

Reading and learning is so important to my family. The title of the video is "Read a Book," so it caught my eye right away, just from its title. Then I watched it. I was appalled and fascinated. I even, though I hate to admit it, thought it rather funny. It is in the style of rap music, and is from a genre called "Crunk." Like it or not, this is the sort of music young people (and even a lot of older people) listen to today. It is complete with copious expletives and even copious use of the "n" word. It leaves the viewer to wonder, "has the 'n' word been truly embraced by the African American culture and the popular culture at large and thus stripped of its power?... Or not?... Hmmmmm... One wonders... Surely, this word is still hurtful to many. And yet, embracoing the word is an interesting strategy for diffusing hate... Has it worked?

I think as I watch the video, I am struck by the fact that the artist seems to be saying (with the voice of youth) what youth always says to us old fuddy-duddies: "Get real! This song about and for real people, and real people do and say "vulgar" things... It's a part of life... Get over yourselves!" And yet, it also seems to be saying to the youth with astonishing forthrightness, "Please, embrace some good-old 'fuddy-duddy' virtues, practical things like: study, work hard, keep yourself clean, and take care of those who depend on you.

Gone are the days of the rather cute Electric Company children's programming songs we remember which encouraged positive behavior. Is this what it takes to reach our youth today, who really do listen to this sort of language in their music daily (but with much less positive messages)? Maybe it is. If they are going to listen to this sort of music and language daily anyway, maybe hitting them over the head with a message like this is good. Maybe it's not. Maybe the artist is spoofing and scolding the artists, too, for creating vulgarity? Or, is he embracing their vulgarity? And what about words? Should we be ultra-careful and politically correct with them, or "get over ourselves" and "get real!"?

Hmmmmm... So interesting. It must be art, if I have this many questions!

Musing:

Not that this could happen... but I think this video would be great for my Mom, a minister and district superintendent for the Methodist Church, to show at her upcoming national conference. Despite the language and the satire, it really goes right to the heart of many problems in our country, and it shines a searing mirror with humor, satire, and in its own peculiar way, dead on seriousness.

The Methodist church (like many protestant denominations who want to be modern but are not) make such a big deal about inclusivity, and yet are not inclusive. Gay folks, for example, are not accepted. And could these churches really accept, exactly as they are (language and hip hop and all), the young people in this video?

Do not society and the church, both, really need to reach and accept all, exactly where they are: language, vulgar music, warts and all? Can society and the church truly accept, reach out to in a real way, and embrace all aspects of its youth and its disenfranchised, even when their words, manner, music, way of loving etc., is abrasive to traditional sensibilities? This, I think is, what will determine the true future of the church and society as a whole.

Uncondtional love, inclusion, thoughtful understanding, freedom of speech and expression, dialogue and respect (even when that is difficult) will insure the continuation of the church and society. Rigid sticking to old paradigms will insure doom for both. Individuals, as the video suggests, must take a long hard look at themselves. And sometimes, a little humor, cutting satire, forthrightness, etc., helps in this....

ALL of us could read more, care for our loved ones better, bathe more, brush our teeth more often, and drink more water! LOL. :)

The comments at the bottom of the videos (on YouTube) are quite revelatory concerning the state of America, race relations, education, society, truth, etc... The comments are worth wading through. The video is funny, revealing, mirror-like, purposely provocative, and thoughtful in its own way... it's interesting, I think. Art makes us think, react, laugh, argue, question... Art, music, books, education, discourse... All so important.

Links are below... I suggest you look at all three... The video IS shocking, I will admit. (But I am very glad I watched it!)

Michael :)
