NEO SOUL

ok. Straight from Texas comes "The Neo-Soul Slam Poetry" group. This commission comes courtesy of Ms. Jo Vanzandt. To summarize, these verbal assassins compete locally and nationally against poetry troupes around the country for the title of National Slam Poetry Champions. This piece is going to be used for promotional items such as t-shirts, posters, cd's, etc. An extra big shout out goes to Ms. Vanzandt who found me via blogger and I'm glad she did...I haven't gotten a chance to stretch my wings in a while on a piece like this...so, I had fun!!! Here's some progression shots as promised. Enjoy!

    Hi Tyree,

I'm a former CSUN animation student; you might remember me. Although I visit your blog regularly (really I do!), this is my first comment because I just realized you don't need an account with Blogger to leave a comment (I know "DUH!").

Anyway, this is a fantastic piece. Each caricature is appealing and still provides the viewer with an idea of the subject's personality.

    This was done digitally, right?

  8. adrian - whaddup, fam! thanks for finally showin love. lol! but, yeah...this piece was done completely digitally. didn't really have time to fuss with a tight line drawing. What you see in the progressions is pretty much how I work under time constraints. Look at the reference for a bit, but don't be a slave to it, go with my gut (the red drawing), then, emotional lines. I worry about "drawing" in the painting stage becuz the final product is going to be in values.

Thanks for the comment on the personalities...that's huge cuz I don't know ANY of these people. I don't think I'm a good character designer...but, I'm a good judge of character.

joey - no doubt. Thanks again so much for the opportunity and the patience. I'm sooooo glad peeble are pleased.

shelle (aka sex kitten) - That's a very nice compliment. I like those kinda reactions. I'm even happier now. I'm glad Ms. V saw something in my work that she knew I'd be able to bring something special to the table. I'm glad your pleased and I had fun diggin into every nuance I could to pull personality and subtle caricature from each of you. Respect and good luck with the tournies.

goro - my man. Your comment means alot, man. Since I wasn't doing a line drawing, the values were what I was after completely cuz that would give it that "uuuumphf". Thanks again!!! :D

Man, you are hella talented. I mean you got me down; from my bracelet to my my necklace. I was being goofy the other day and I had my arm on Jo's head. She stopped me and says, "Remember that you just did that, so you know what I'm talking about when I remind you later". Man, I had no IDEA what she was talking about. Then last night I saw the final art. I almost fell out. That is hilarious man. From Joe's thousand watt smile to B's Gunshow (lookin like a superhero), Mike's expression and long belt. Pause. Chelle is very happy about her ample representation of certain personal ASSets, she also commented on something else, but we TRY to be gentlemen, so we gladly mentioned that she POINTED it out first. Kim liked the changes that you made to the final edit, I think she fell in love with you when she saw the 13 on her shirt. Well done sir, well done!

  12. Allen - I can't tell you how good that makes me feel. For me not even to know you, any of you, but still get you all down as you see yourselves...that's an accomplishment and I'm blessed to have been able to pull it off. Thanks for showin me love!!!

tony - I accept paypal and major credit cards...you do not have to wait for next year to get a sketch, homie. ;)

beezle and heri - thanks a lot. Come anytime.

Kristian - (blush) thanks dawg. I left your message your blog...but, about the changing of expression, it happens. And, even if I would have figured everybody out on paper first...it still would have happened most likely...shit, it ALWAYS happens.

    spreadin as we speak...
