  1. thanks, paul.
informal subdivision is a compositional tool developed by Andrew Loomis to genereate random, yet, rhythmic pictures based on angles. The opposite, formal subdivsion, works the same whay, but, all of the angles are equisitant and are mostly reserved for pictures that require strict/static order. Examples of formal would be: religious pictures, statues, family crests, mirrored tribal designs...etc. Informal sub-D, is what alot of comic book and fantasy illustrators use...at least the sophisticated ones that I've seen. But, some people have natural rhythm. This convention is just mainly reserved for when you can't generate pictures. Once you come up with a theme, you basically fit them into the picture frame as many was as you can. Loomis even had was to base composition off letters and numbers: A, C, T, X, S, 8, 7, 2, U. You can even mix these symbols together to produce pictures. The point is, whatever gets you going.
If you want, I can e-mail you specific notes or you do a google search for loomis books online and download them for free. This technique comes from "Creative Illustration" - a must have for anyone who does narrative and figurative works, imo.
