Real Paints - Again
2.5 hour oil of my dawg, Sean aka Esquire - album dropping 2006. He wanted to know how I approached painting traditionally, so I sat him kinda behind me and painted this looking over my shoulder so he could see how I did it. That wack looking texture is the Fredrix canvas panel I was using...I'm sorry but that stuff is horrible.
NBA SEASON IS BACK!!
Sup ya'll. I went to a cool gathering last night at Charles Zembillas's, The Animation Academy. Draughtsmen, Richard Chavez from SPA was there showing his visual development work. I must say...it gave me further definition of what REAL FINISHED work means. Don't get me wrong...it's fun to sketch...but, to be able to take an idea to that "next" level...story, composition, color, lighting, mood...that's what I'm after.
This is one such attempt into that arena from earlier this year. This piece was for an editorial illustration in Bounce magazine (you might not have heard it...doesn't matter...walk with me). The article was about today's NBA player (the new skool) and how they're pretty much all about themselves. So, in short, this is what I came up with.
The small sketches are just 12 out of 50 thumbnails I did to come up with the final illustration. CONTEST: Guess which one was the basis for the final. PRIZE: a virtual cookie. :)
I would have rathered have gone with some of the more wild ideas I had and god knows this piece coulda been better, but I was lazy and did it in 2.5 days after a full-time job. Eh...enuff excuses...here tizz.
Also, wanna big up Charles for those words last night. They hit me at the perfect time.
